Mission: To strike at the root problem in our democracy—an unbalanced campaign finance system that puts big campaign donors’ priorities over the concerns of ordinary people.

Rootstrikers is an internet activist network dedicated to helping people advocate for a democracy where the wealthy elite cannot use huge campaign contributions to rig the system in their favor. Originally founded by Harvard Professor Larry Lessig and Democratic strategist Joe Trippi, the organization is now a part of Demand Progress, a grassroots group of over two million affiliated activists focusing on civil liberties. Rootstrikers uses technology to engage people in democracy reform.

Current Democracy Work

Rootstrikers mobilizes citizens through online campaigns and petitions focused on getting the influence of big money out of politics and reducing the political influence of big corporations. It supports fundamental money-in-politics reform like the Fair Elections Now Act and also promotes reform on Wall Street.

Recent Successes

In 2015, Rootstrikers led the online coalition at FightBigMoney.com, generating more than 215,000 signatures calling for presidential candidates to champion a serious plan to get big money’s influence out of politics. It was also a lead organizer for PresidentObamasLegacy.org, an online petition demanding that President Obama follow through on his pledges to take action against “secret political spending” and to “unmask secret political donors.”
