$80 million "community economy" of housing co-ops has been developed in Western Massachuse

Alperovitz says that more than 130 million Americans - more than 40 percent of the population - belong to one or more co-ops. Not just food co-ops but also agricultural co-ops, retail co-ops (such as REI) and retailer-owned co-ops (such as ACE Hardware), health care co-ops, high-technology industry co-ops, artist co-ops, and credit unions. The Alliance to Develop Power, in Western Massachusetts, has developed what Alperovitz calls an $80 million "community economy" of housing co-ops and other cooperatively controlled businesses.
