A review of the scientific literature on trans fats' health effects found that an increase of just 2% in caloric intake of trans fats was associated with 23% higher risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). The reviewers also estimated that 10-19% of CHD events in the US could be averted by reducing Americans' consumption of trans fats--up to 228,000 coronary events annually.
