By most measures the gap between rich and poor, globally and within countries, has been growing. The difference in per capita income between the world's wealthiest 20% and the poorest 20% was 30:1 in 1960 this ratio jumped to 78:1 in 1994 and decreased slightly to 74:1 in 1999.
