Ten new US-style community courts are to be set up in Great Britain with the aim of bringing the criminal justice process closer to the people it serves. The new courts, to be announced today, will combine judges, probation officers and support services under one roof. Two will be in London, seven in other parts of England and one will be in Wales. They follow on the success of similar community courts in Liverpool and Salford. Although the new courts will not be exact replicas, they will all apply what the Government regards as the key principles of local justice. These include the robust and speedy handling of cases, reparation of harm and raising confidence, re-integration of offenders and building up communities.
