Coconut palm trees produce 50-75% more sugar per acre than cane fields with 20% less resources
"Coconut palm trees produce up to 75 percent more sugar per acre than cane fields do, and require just one-fifth of the resources to crank out the same amount of sweetener."
[DF - This quote is from the Nov 2013 issue of Sierra Magazine, page 8. The information is according to Madhava, the manufacturers of a coconut sugar product. A study demonstrating these figures would be helpful.]
The Madhava website: "Madhava Organic Coconut Sugar is a delicious, pure, unrefined alternative to processed sugar and artificial sweeteners. The sustainably grown, Non-GMO Project Verified sweetener is produced from the flower bud of the coconut tree. In addition to tasting delicious, organic coconut sugar has naturally occurring nutrients including magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, B vitamins, and amino acids...The coconut palm tree produces 50% to 75% more sugar per acre than cane sugar - and it only uses 20% of the resources."
